Collagen: A Battle Against Time

Collagen is a fibrous, supportive protein composed of amino acids that are found in different organs and tissues within the body. Within the skin, we can credit its resiliency to the dermis which houses your natural collagen and provides strength, elasticity, and hydration via elastin and glycosaminoglycans. As we age, the rate of collagen breakdown increases with time while the rate of collagen synthesis decreases. This means we are breaking down collagen faster than our body can rebuild new collagen.

It is estimated that we lose ~1% of collagen per year and by the age of 45, your face has lost approximately 25% of its collagen. Aesthetically, this loss in collagen results in a decrease in the fullness and resiliency of tissues and causes fine lines, wrinkles, and loose and/or sagging skin.

In order to preserve our natural collagen, it is recommended to consider the following:

  • Sunscreen: Protect your collagen from damage by free radicals

  • Medical-grade skincare: Vitamin C, Retinol, Growth Factors, and Peptides have been clinically shown to increase collagen production.

  • Injectables: Sculptra and Radiesse are injectables approved to stimulate collagen production within the dermis.

  • In-Office Treatments: Microneedling, Radiofrequency, and Ultrasound technology can stimulate new collagen production.
