Dermal Fillers: What Age To Start?
A common question I get asked is “What age should I start receiving filler injections?”. And I hate to say it, but there isn’t a direct answer. It depends on several factors, including: (1) what is your aesthetic goal, (2) your underlying anatomy, and (3) are we already seeing wrinkles, volume loss, sagging skin, and facial folds?
Dermal fillers are used as both prevention and correction of moderate wrinkles and facial folds for a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. It can also be used for cosmetic augmentation of lips. Statistics have shown that the most common age range for patients receiving filler is between 40-50 years old. However, in practice, the age range of patients I see is a wide spectrum.
20s: to either prevent deep wrinkles and folds or correct genetic deficits. Some patients in their 20s already exhibit anatomical deficits or volume loss due to their genetics and/or lifestyle choices. For example, a patient born with a retrognathic (recessed) chin may consider chin filler or an athlete with a lower body-fat composition may have a gaunt appearance to the face and may request volume to balance them out.
However, if you are in this age group - please proceed with caution! Too much filler placed incorrectly can lead to unnatural results and can actually make you look older.
30-40s: to either prevent deep wrinkles or folds from progressing or correct genetic deficits. Many patients notice the early signs of aging during this time and may decide to come in to address these issues before they progress.
50-60s: usually to correct deep wrinkles and folds. Many patients have visible signs of aging and may require multiple treatments prior to seeing a significant difference.
60+: surgical vs non-surgical candidates need to be differentiated. Some aging concerns may be better addressed with surgery at this time. Consult with multiple providers prior to making a decision.
Because everyone’s tolerance for aging is variable, there is no optimal age to start since genetics and lifestyle play a role in aging.
No matter what age you start, dermal fillers are a great consideration for your anti-aging journey.
