Dermal Fillers: What are they & how do they work?

As we age, our skin loses its youthfulness. We may notice new wrinkles on our face or sagging skin in places where it was once lifted.

For those seeking non-surgical alternatives, dermal fillers are a popular treatment option.

Dermal fillers are injected under the skin to improve facial symmetry, restore anatomical deficits, restore volume or fullness, smooth lines, soften creases, enhance contours, or diminish scars.

They work by boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid, adding volume to the skin and instantly diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles giving it a natural, soft look.

Dermal fillers are broken down into categories:

  • Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in the skin. Hyaluronic acid fillers are soft, gel-like substances that increase volume and hydration.

    • Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero, RHA Collection, and Versa

  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite Fillers: a mineral-like compound found naturally in our bones. Calcium particles are suspended in a smooth gel and are thicker than traditional hyaluronic acid fillers. Typically used in deeper lines and wrinkles and helps stimulate collagen production.

    • Radiesse

  • Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) Fillers: a synthetic, biocompatible substance. This type of filler is typically used in scars and is semi-permanent.

    • Bellafill

Once your filler is injected, it takes about 3-4 weeks for your results to settle and for any underlying inflammation to resolve.

Over time, your body's metabolism will break down products, and retreatment is needed every 12-36 months (depending on location and filler used) to maintain your results.
